May 2017 — This guide steps through five recommended techniques for supporting second language learners. It also provides related rationale for each technique and guidance on how to implement in the classroom. The techniques are: create links to personal experiences and background knowledge; encourage use of first languages; give students time to process and test ideas; enhance meaning with pictures, objects and actions; and practice the sounds of the target language.
