Unequal gender norms foster sexual violence and coercion, unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. FHI 360 creates sector and region-appropriate programming with the goal of strengthening the capacity of women, men and children to change social and cultural norms that place them at risk of gender-based violence.
In one of our programs, for example, we addressed gender-based violence among school-age children. Using community radio, theater and other communication channels, we were able to raise awareness and equip local communities to promote positive gender norms and prevent violence. In addition, our work and research on gender norms provide evidence that contributes to successful program design.
